Relevant personnel must include:

client

site personnel.

Equipment must include personal protective equipment (PPE) and at least four of the following:

camera

computer

collection containers

lifting gear

measurement equipment

process charts and diagrams

recording and counting equipment

reference manuals

safety barriers and warning signs

sample bench

scales

site maps

software.

Specific site requirements must include:

access and egress points

locations of plant and equipment to be audited

time of audit to coincide with specific processes and operations

work health and safety requirements and noise control

work permits if required.

Compliance requirements must include:

commonwealth, state and territory legislation relating to waste process audits, including:

environmental protection

hazardous substances and dangerous goods

industry codes

client confidentiality and privacy

work health and safety

licensing requirements.

Waste processes must include:

actual and potential sources of waste

efficiency and effectiveness of work processes in managing and minimising waste

inputs, outputs and material balances

processes for waste pre-treatment, storing, handling and disposal.


Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy the requirements of the elements, performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions of this unit.

The person must also undertake two waste process audits.

While conducting above waste process audits, the person must:

consult with client to negotiate, agree and organise auditing processes and timeframes and obtain the client’s written approval for the audit

identify and comply with specific site requirements, as specified in the range of conditions

work safely to identify and manage or report hazards and risks at the audit site, and while using equipment, as specified in the range of conditions

interview site personnel to obtain operational and waste information

observe, assess and record waste processes including quantifying, characterising and sourcing produced waste streams to identify how and why they are generated

compile and present waste process audit findings

follow organisational policies and procedures and regulatory and legal requirements.


Knowledge Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must demonstrate knowledge of:

classifications of waste

hazards and risks associated with waste including hazardous substances and dangerous goods

industry-accepted waste audit processes, including:

common reasons for undertaking a waste process audit

methods used to assess waste types, streams and characteristics

waste minimisation hierarchy

sampling and recording techniques

types of client waste management surveys and their uses

site scoping

organisational policies and procedures and regulatory and legal requirements relating to waste process audits

waste containment methods

waste disposal and recovery methods

waste non-conformances.
